A New Creature-Collecting Open-World RPG Launches Amid High Expectations

Animo is a creature-collecting open-world action RPG developed and published by Pawprint Studios. It first launched on PC and console platforms on September 16, 2026, before expanding to mobile platforms on September 23.

Players explore the continent of Aedel, where Animos live, capturing and raising over 150 unique Animos to build their team. The ‘Twine’ system, which allows players to transform into an Animo and directly participate in combat, has drawn particular attention as a key differentiator.

Exploration elements that leverage each Animo’s unique movement abilities—such as flying through the sky or swimming underwater—are another highlight of the game. Players can explore diverse environments including island regions, volcanic zones, and glaciers, encountering rare Animos that only appear in specific areas.

According to the official website, Animo surpassed 40 million global pre-registrations ahead of its official launch. Even after release, it has shown strong interest, recording a peak concurrent player count of 168,260 on Steam (per SteamDB).

Viewers from Diverse Countries Including the U.S., Thailand, and Brazil

According to the ContentFlux Top 100 chart, which tracks global streaming metrics, Animo ranked 21st in YouTube weekly peak concurrent viewers and 20th in Twitch weekly peak concurrent viewers during its launch week (September 14–20).

It ranked relatively lower at 85th in the YouTube weekly cumulative views chart, likely because the data was split across the tracking period around its launch date of September 16.

On Chzzk, a Korean streaming platform, it debuted at 17th place with over 29,700 peak concurrent viewers, confirming interest from major streamers as well.

In Week 4 of September (September 21–27), Animo climbed the YouTube rankings. It rose to 14th in peak concurrent viewers and 17th in cumulative views, showing the data stabilizing. On Twitch, it also moved up one spot to 16th.

On Chzzk, peak concurrent viewers increased to over 32,300 compared to the previous week, while maintaining its 16th-place ranking.

By video creation count, the United States also ranked first at 12.9%, followed by Thailand (10.4%), Indonesia (9.7%), Brazil (8.0%), and South Korea (5.3%). This demonstrates that interest is spreading from English-speaking markets to diverse regions including Southeast Asia and South America.

Gameplay-Focused Streams Draw Attention, but Sponsored Videos Receive Mixed Reactions

Next, we examined gameplay videos and viewer reactions from global creators. First, we analyzed a sponsored video from Fextralife, a major U.S. gaming channel with approximately 3.61 million subscribers (as of September 28, 2026).

The video covers the overall gameplay experience of the open-world game, where players become explorers, collect monsters, and fight by Twining with Animos.

The creator positively evaluated the combat system that deepens as players level up despite appearing simple at first, the Animo spawn patterns that vary with different ecosystems and weather, and the ability to enjoy the game from a new perspective through Twining with Animos.

Key Points - A free open-world RPG focused on collecting various creatures called Animos and exploration - Animo spawn patterns change with different ecosystems, weather, and time of day - Over 200 Animos with unique evolution paths and abilities - The ‘Twine’ system with Animos enables gameplay from a new perspective - Monetization centers on battle passes and cosmetic items, allowing free-to-play progression Low Points - Somewhat limited character customization compared to other games - No opportunity to directly experience PvP mode - Simplistic gameplay during the early stages - Some Animo designs are aggressive and less approachable - Insufficient detailed explanations for some in-game systems

Sentiment analysis of the YouTube comments on the video showed that negative reactions accounted for the highest share at 42%, followed by neutral at 36% and positive at 23%. The primary drivers of negative reactions were attributed to credibility concerns around sponsored reviews and comparisons with similar games.

Comment sentiment distribution for Fextralife’s Animo YouTube video
Positive Summary - Praise for enjoyable region exploration and an honest review - Expectations for the high quality and diverse content of a free game - Reactions of personally enjoying the game and recommending it to friends Neutral Summary - Discussions comparing Pokémon, Genshin Impact, and Palworld, and the differences between each game - Debates about the objectivity of sponsored reviews rather than the game itself - Interest in and wait-and-see attitudes toward a new genre game Negative Summary - Doubts about the credibility of sponsored reviews - Critical views labeling it as ‘yet another Pokémon clone’ - Criticism of insufficient originality compared to expectations

Next, we analyzed a video from HookHuukGaming, a Thai gaming channel with 178,000 subscribers. The video shares the creator’s gameplay experience upon reaching Level 40.

HookHuuk positively evaluated the reward system that lets players choose one of 14 ‘Lumi’ Animos for free upon reaching Level 40, as well as the fun of collecting over 200 Animos.

However, HookHuuk noted drawbacks such as the randomness of capture and color change results making it difficult to get desired outcomes, and some systems being too complex for beginners to understand.

Key Points - Free selection of one of 14 ‘Lumi’ Animos upon reaching Level 40 - Fun of collecting over 200 Animos and building teams - Free-to-play friendly with monetization not essential for game progression - Open-world exploration across diverse environments - Unique combat and exploration experience through the Twine system Low Points - Randomized capture and color change results make it hard to get desired outcomes - Some systems are complex and unfriendly to beginners - Somewhat slow story progression - Multiplayer content is lacking

Sentiment analysis of the viewer comments on this video showed neutral reactions accounting for the majority at 65%, followed by positive at 23% and negative at 12%. This contrasted markedly with the Fextralife video’s sentiment distribution, likely because it was a voluntary gameplay video rather than a sponsored one.

Positive Summary - Sharing Lumi Animo spawn experiences and gratitude toward the creator - Satisfaction with the game’s high quality and free-to-play model - Fun of collecting various Animos Neutral Summary - Inquiries about whether Steam accounts can be linked to mobile - Discussions comparing it with other games - Exchanging information about game systems Negative Summary - Complaints that Lumi, Sparkle, and other color-variant Animos have the same stats as regular ones - Criticism of gacha rates - Complaints about server instability

Following its record-breaking 40 million pre-registrations, Animo continues to maintain solid interest in the streaming market after launch. Creators from various countries and language regions are producing content, with the game’s creature-collecting and exploration elements being the core topics of discussion.

Ensuring that interested players continue to stay engaged through content updates and community communication will be the key challenge going forward. We will continue to monitor the changes in Animo’s streaming metrics.
