1 Million Players in One Week, Launching to “Mixed” Reviews

Mistfall Hunter is a dark fantasy action extraction RPG developed by Bellring Games and published by Skystone Games. The game officially launched on July 30 across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.

Set in a dark fantasy world consumed by a mysterious golden mist, players take on the role of Gold Hunters revived by a mysterious girl named Lu. Their mission is to restore the shattered Web of Fate, gather loot, and successfully extract from the battlefield.

Each match supports up to 15 players, who can enter either solo or in three-player parties. The game combines a PvPvE extraction structure—where players face both monsters and rival users—with Soulslike-inspired action combat.

Mistfall Hunter had already ranked among the more popular demos during Steam Next Fest in June. According to an official announcement from Bellring Games on August 6, the game surpassed 1 million cumulative players worldwide within one week of launch.

Meanwhile, user reviews on the platform show a mixture of positive and negative reactions.

As of August 7, a total of 8,306 Steam users had reviewed the game, with 63% positive reviews, giving it an overall rating of “Mixed.”

Players have praised the game’s dark apocalyptic atmosphere, satisfying combat mechanics, and the tension created by its loot-and-extract gameplay loop.

However, criticism has focused on high network latency and ping issues in certain regions, frame drops, server instability, the absence of a solo mode at launch, and the game’s monetization structure.

Genre Fatigue Becoming an Issue? Negative Viewer Reactions Take the Lead

We next examined broader audience sentiment toward the game through gameplay videos from global creators and viewer feedback.

First, UK-based FPS YouTuber jackfrags, who has 4.26 million subscribers, published sponsored Mistfall Hunter content on July 30.

The video provided a detailed overview of the game’s core mechanics as a medieval dark fantasy PvPvE extraction title, including class-based skills, boss fights, and the loot progression structure.

The creator highlighted how the risk-reward structure of extraction gameplay combines with Soulslike-inspired melee combat to create a distinctive sense of tension.

At the same time, he pointed to several shortcomings, including difficulty aiming due to the lack of a lock-on system, a somewhat complex interface, and a high entry barrier for boss encounters.

Key Points

  • PvPvE extraction gameplay set in a fantasy world

  • Multiple classes with action RPG-style skills and abilities

  • Solo, duo, and trio modes offering varied party compositions

  • Gear progression through quests and boss encounters

  • Extraction mechanics that create a highly tense gameplay experience

Low Points

  • Lack of a lock-on system makes aiming and combat more difficult

  • High boss difficulty creates a steep learning curve for newcomers

  • Class-restricted items and long skill cooldowns

  • Risk of being ambushed by other players during extraction

  • Complex in-game interface and early-level restrictions

YouTube comment sentiment analysis for the video showed that negative reactions accounted for the largest share at 46%, followed by neutral sentiment at 36% and positive sentiment at 19%.

Negative comments primarily focused on fatigue and resistance toward what viewers perceived as an oversaturated extraction genre.

  • Positive reactions to the tension associated with extraction gameplay and anticipation for a potential Game Pass release

Neutral Summary

  • Comparisons with other extraction and Soulslike titles, along with discussions about adding a PvE-only mode

  • Requests for improvements to the complex UI, stiff combat feel, optimization, and server performance

Negative Summary

  • Genre fatigue caused by extraction-game oversaturation and frustration with mandatory PvPvE systems

  • Concerns over losing progression and loot, aggressive monetization, and cheating

Next, U.S.-based FPS creator Aztecross, who has 1.06 million subscribers, released a video on August 3 based on more than 20 hours of hands-on gameplay.

Despite not typically being a fan of the extraction genre, Aztecross praised the game for combining deep RPG progression with enjoyable party-based gameplay, resulting in a highly immersive experience.

However, he openly criticized technical limitations encountered during play, including frequent network latency and ping issues, the lack of a lock-on system, and sluggish movement caused by the absence of sprinting.

Key Points

  • More than 20 hours of hands-on experience combining RPG and extraction gameplay

  • Diverse class selection and team-oriented party play

  • Unique balance created by the lack of lock-on and sprint mechanics

  • Core gameplay focused on boss battles and equipment collection

  • Stronger RPG identity through social systems and equipment upgrades

Low Points

  • Technical issues and network latency during PvP encounters

  • Increased combat difficulty due to the absence of a lock-on system

  • Difficulty chasing or escaping because sprinting is unavailable

  • Limited visibility due to the lack of field-of-view adjustment

  • Resource management difficulties caused by limited inventory and storage space

Viewer comment sentiment analysis for the video showed that negative reactions accounted for a majority at 51%, followed by neutral sentiment at 26% and positive sentiment at 23%.

As with the jackfrags video, a significant portion of negative comments focused on fatigue with core extraction mechanics such as repetitive gameplay and the risk of losing acquired loot.

Positive Summary

  • Strong interest in the melee-focused combat and dark fantasy setting

  • Praise for systems perceived as more accessible and forgiving than other extraction games

Neutral Summary

  • Discussion over the game’s identity between Soulslike and extraction genres, as well as its appropriate price point

  • Calls for regular updates and a PvE-only mode to broaden mainstream appeal

Negative Summary

  • Genre fatigue caused by repetitive gameplay and the risk of losing loot

  • Criticism of sluggish controls, optimization and server issues, and expensive cosmetic monetization

After surpassing 1 million cumulative players within its first week, Mistfall Hunter also showed strong early momentum in the streaming market, climbing as high as No.13 on Twitch’s weekly chart.

However, technical issues—including network latency and server stability—remain areas in need of improvement.

At the same time, the game must also overcome broader audience fatigue toward the defining mechanics of the extraction genre itself.

Whether Mistfall Hunter can continue to evolve both as a game and as streaming content will ultimately depend on how the developer addresses these challenges going forward.
