Streaming Data Shows Strong Buzz Alongside Negative Feedback

This week's hottest title at a glance — global streaming metrics! We took a look together with ContentFlux, a data analytics solution.

Today's subject is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. We checked the streaming data on the interest this new entry in the popular IP — set on the Korean peninsula — has drawn since its beta early access, ahead of full launch.

Steam Weekly Top 3, but Reviews Start 'Mostly Negative'

Developed primarily by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a first-person shooter set against the backdrop of a full-scale war crisis on the Korean peninsula. The game bundles together a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes.

The campaign moves between the stories of Private Park and Captain Price, unfolding across Korea, Paris, Mumbai, and other locations worldwide. Private Park loses Seoul to a sudden North Korean invasion and retreats, then fights to retake the city center in the counterattack that follows. Captain Price, cut off from his unit, becomes a lone fugitive carrying out his own mission.

On the gameplay side, changes aimed to reduce randomness and sharpen the feel of control. The new 'Ballistic Authority' system removes bullet spread so shots land exactly where aimed, improving shooting consistency, while movement that smoothly links parkour and sliding adds to the immersion of combat.

Customization has also changed — an AI agent named 'Gunny' now automatically suggests weapon builds tailored to a player's style.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, 2026.

Ahead of launch, two beta rounds are planned. The week 1 early access ran from the 22nd to the 26th of this month, and the week 2 open beta — open to anyone without pre-registration or a code — runs from the 29th through the 2nd of next month.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 proved its box-office anticipation by reaching No. 3 on Steam's weekly most-played chart, tallied during the beta early access period from August 18 to 25.

User reaction, however, was mixed. According to SteamDB data, the positive review rate over that period stood at just 38.2%, landing the game in the 'Mostly Negative' tier.

Charting Well Across Major Platforms, Strongest in the US and English-Speaking Markets

According to ContentFlux's Top 100 chart, which tracks global streaming metrics, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 landed on major streaming platform charts and drew creator attention even at the beta early-access stage, ahead of full launch.

In the first tracked week, week 3 of August (Aug 17–23), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 re-entered (RE) Twitch's Global Top 100 at No. 13, recording a peak concurrent viewership of over 615,800.

It also re-entered (RE) YouTube's weekly cumulative view count chart at No. 28, racking up over 43.6 million cumulative views. On Chzzk, the domestic Korean platform, it made a first-time entry (NEW) at No. 51, with peak concurrent viewership topping 7,000.

In the following week, week 4 of August (Aug 24–30), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 logged a weekly peak concurrent viewership on Twitch of over 264,600, dropping 4 spots week-over-week to No. 17, while on YouTube it fell 40 spots to No. 68 (over 2.8 million views).

On Chzzk, peak concurrent viewership was over 2,300, down 13 spots week-over-week to No. 64. The overall decline is attributed to reduced content output as the beta early access period wrapped up.

Meanwhile, SOOP had no chart data, as a dedicated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 category has not yet been created on the platform.

The chart also showed various other series entries — Call of Duty: Warzone, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Call of Duty: Black Ops — holding their own ranking positions, underscoring the overall strength of the Call of Duty IP.

Comments Skew Negative — What Fell Short

Next, we looked at how the community is reading the new title through global creators' playthrough videos and viewer feedback.

First, UK-based FPS specialist YouTuber 'jackfrags,' with 4.27 million subscribers, released a first-weekend PC beta playthrough of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on August 23. The video covered the game's graphics, sound, and animation in the latest build.

The creator gave positive marks to the fast pace, gameplay and animation reminiscent of the smooth feel of 2019's Modern Warfare, and the improved aim consistency from removing bullet spread.

That said, he also flagged some rough edges: difficulty with certain mechanics like slide-canceling, confusing in-game UI elements such as the map display, position exposure from laser sights, and confusion caused by changed spawn locations.

Key Points - Shared first PC beta playthrough experience - Positive take on the game's graphics, sound, and animation - Noticeably improved aim consistency from removed bloom - Gameplay and animation feel reminiscent of 2019's Modern Warfare - Introduced various game modes (Quick Play, Kill Block Gunfight, Cash Grab, and more)
Low Points - Difficulty using some features (e.g. slide-canceling) - Confusing in-game UI elements (e.g. map display) - Laser sights causing position-exposure issues - Confusion from changed spawn locations - Some game modes felt overly chaotic and messy

Sentiment analysis of the video's YouTube comments found negative sentiment highest at 42%, followed by neutral at 36% and positive at 22%.

Neutral Summary - Some sense of copy-paste from past titles, along with TTK criticism - Preference for other titles like Battlefield 6, and comments about waiting for a sale rather than buying at full price
Negative Summary - Complaints about repetitive-play fatigue, high similarity to previous titles, and a lack of innovation - Frustration voiced over matchmaking issues, rampant hacking/cheating, and inadequate anti-cheat measures

Next, US-based general gaming YouTuber 'JEV,' with 5.48 million subscribers, posted a video on August 24 covering the latest update and beta gameplay for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

JEV introduced the new map 'Lotus' and the added map-voting feature, along with weapon balance changes, and noted that the game conveys a feel that blends elements from previous entries in the series. He also spotlighted a fix for frame drops when using flashbangs, and motivating elements like camo collection.

That said, he was candid about community concerns and complaints — aim assist set too strong, movement that feels off compared to previous titles, matchmaking imbalance, and a sharp drop in player count.

Key Points - Covered the title's latest update and the new map-voting feature - Explained the new map 'Lotus' and how it plays - Fixed FPS drops when using flashbangs - Highlighted the camo collection system and the importance of in-game objectives - A neutral stance — not amazed by the game, but not disliking it either
Low Points - Rising overall player dissatisfaction with the game - FPS drops when using flashbangs - Unfairness and confusion in the matchmaking system - Aim assist set too strong - Sharp drop in beta player count

Sentiment analysis of viewer comments on the video found negative sentiment highest at 47%, followed by neutral at 34% and positive at 19%.

Neutral Summary - Comments that it feels similar to previous titles, plus discussion of the matchmaking system - Mentions that controller aim assist has an edge
Negative Summary - Criticism of the disappearance of tactical play, fast pacing, unbalanced combat, and the matchmaking system - Disappointment voiced over hacking/cheating issues, poor netcode and other technical issues, and the franchise's declining trajectory

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 demonstrated the IP's continued standing through this beta early access. Beyond landing at No. 3 on Steam's weekly popularity chart, it also earned a spot on major streaming platform charts like Twitch and YouTube, drawing creator interest well ahead of full launch.

At the same time, though, clear challenges emerged. With Steam user reviews landing at 'Mostly Negative,' creators' playthrough impressions and viewer comment sentiment together made clear where players' frustrations lie.

The negative reception now is a bitter result, but it also means the areas needing improvement are now clear. All eyes are on what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — still to go through a second beta — will look like at full launch.
