Strong presence across domestic and global platforms, with data confirming its global success

A look at this week’s hottest titles through global streaming metrics! Let’s explore the data with the analytics solution ContentFlux.

Today’s spotlight is on Crimson Desert. After seven years of development, this expansive open-world title achieved a turnaround in reception through rapid updates. We analyzed its trajectory on global streaming charts through data.

4 Million Copies Sold: Crimson Desert Reverses Public Sentiment Through Communication

Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure developed by Pearl Abyss using its proprietary “BlackSpace Engine” over seven years. Centered around Cliff, the leader of a mercenary group on the continent of Pywel, the game features realistic physics-based combat and a high degree of sandbox freedom.

Initial reception at launch was sharply divided. The game’s sophisticated graphics powered by its proprietary engine and its vast open world were praised. However, its weighty, realism-focused controls, unintuitive UI, and lack of narrative depth for the protagonist were cited as entry barriers.

Compounding this, controversy surrounding the undisclosed use of generative AI resources led Steam user reviews to fall into the “Mixed” category (40%–69% positive). Its Metacritic score also came in at a somewhat disappointing 78, given the high expectations.

However, Pearl Abyss quickly turned the tide by actively incorporating user feedback. A major update on March 29 focused on improving movement controls and adding key shortcut functionalities, addressing technical shortcomings.

As a result, users began to recognize the game’s intricate interactions and emergent gameplay more clearly, leading to a surge in user-generated content (UGC) and renewed appreciation.

This proactive post-launch support translated directly into sales growth. Starting with 2 million copies sold on launch day, the game surpassed 4 million copies within just 12 days. Peak concurrent players on Steam reached 276,261.

As of April 3, Steam user reviews had improved to “Mostly Positive” (76%) in Korean and “Very Positive” (82%) overall, signaling a stable recovery from its initial slump.

Early Indicators Highlight the Presence of a Major Title

Released on March 20, Crimson Desert quickly climbed into top ranks across major real-time streaming platforms worldwide, generating strong early momentum.

Despite having only around ten days of data, it ranked 12th on YouTube, 15th on Twitch, 13th on CHZZK, and 19th on SOOP in March content volume rankings, demonstrating its presence as a major new release.

Weekly metrics show a clear trajectory from its launch week (March 16–22) through early April.

In its launch week (Week 3 of March), it reached 5th place on Twitch with a peak concurrent viewership of 1.4 million, while also ranking 2nd on CHZZK and 7th on SOOP—entering top tiers across both domestic and global platforms.

In Week 4 of March (March 23–29), its popularity peaked:

  • YouTube weekly views surpassed 100 million (11th place)

  • CHZZK ranked 1st overall

  • Twitch peak concurrent viewers exceeded 1.8 million

In Week 1 of April (March 30–April 5), metrics showed slight stabilization. Rankings dipped slightly to YouTube 19th, Twitch 12th, and CHZZK 2nd, but the game remained firmly within the Top 20 across major platforms.

How Did Influencers Respond to Crimson Desert?

Alongside real-time streaming metrics, we analyzed reactions from global influencers and audiences.

The influencer theRadBrad, with 13 million subscribers, covered Crimson Desert at launch, highlighting its expansive open world and unique combat system.

He identified the fast-paced combat—combining medieval elements with wrestling-style moves—as a key source of enjoyment, and praised the visual performance in 4K resolution.

However, he also pointed out initial confusion due to unfamiliar controls and a less intuitive inventory UI.

Viewer sentiment for this video was 46% positive. Many viewers compared the game to titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Red Dead Redemption 2, praising its gameplay potential.

On the other hand, some raised concerns about high hardware requirements and texture pop-in issues.

Another channel, Open World Games, has consistently followed up with Crimson Desert content over the past month.

The channel highlighted the achievement of approximately 270,000 concurrent Steam users after updates, positively evaluating Pearl Abyss’s rapid patch response and communication.

Key updates mentioned included the addition of the legendary mount “Silver Fang” and graphical hotfixes.

Viewer sentiment showed a balanced distribution:

  • Positive: 31%

  • Neutral: 31%

  • Negative: 38%

This reflects divided opinions on movement system changes. Improvements to the gliding system were praised for enhancing exploration, while changes to horse movement drew criticism from players who preferred the previous input-intensive control system, citing reduced immersion and stamina efficiency.

Additionally, the strong personality of a character named “Yan” and the fatigue associated with escort quests created mixed reactions among players. Technical issues related to RTX/DLSS were also noted.

Crimson Desert established the foundation for its turnaround through a balance between technological “persistence”—seen in seven years of proprietary engine development—and “adaptation,” reflected in the rapid incorporation of user feedback.

If persistence built the intricate foundation of the Pywel continent, adaptation served as the catalyst that transformed early controversy into measurable performance recovery.

Whether Crimson Desert can maintain this balance and continue to strengthen its core experience remains a key point of attention.
