The Return of an Avatar Simulation Series After 13 Years

Tomodachi Island is a community simulation game released by Nintendo on April 16, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch platform.

Following the release of its predecessor Tomodachi Apartment on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, the franchise remained dormant for years before returning with enhanced graphics and expanded systems.

In the game, players become the manager of an island, moving in “Miis” modeled after themselves, acquaintances, or fictional characters, then observing their daily lives as they interact with one another.

Unlike the previous game’s apartment-focused setting, the new title expands the scope to an entire island, allowing Miis to freely participate in outdoor activities and dynamic interactions.

One of the game’s standout features is its expanded creative freedom. Through the face-painting system, players can directly draw intricate facial details, while the item workshop allows users to design food, clothing, and even island structures themselves.

Alongside these systemic improvements, Tomodachi Island quickly climbed sales charts across major markets after launch.

In Japan, according to Famitsu’s weekly software sales report for the launch week (April 16–19), the physical version sold 565,405 copies, taking first place on the charts.

According to global market research firm GfK, the game also ranked No.1 in weekly sales in the UK by the end of April.
